The Monterey Fishermen's Historical Association (MFHA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Monterey Bay fishing industry. Founded in 1988, MFHA is committed to educating the public about the important role commercial fishing has played in the development of Monterey and the surrounding region.

MFHA’s main goal is to collect and preserve artifacts, photographs, documents and oral histories related to the Monterey Bay fishing industry. The organization works to acquire, preserve and interpret historical materials related to the history of commercial fishing in Monterey and the surrounding area. The association also sponsors educational programs and events to educate the public about the importance of the fishing industry.

The association is supported by private donations, grants, memberships and fundraising activities, including an annual "Fishermen's Fiesta" held in the summer. MFHA is open to the public and offers educational programs, exhibits and a research library. The organization also has a museum, located in a historic building in Monterey, which is open to visitors.

MFHA is an active member of the Monterey community and works with local organizations to promote the history of the fishing industry. The association also collaborates with other organizations to help promote the preservation of the local environment.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.

Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).

Monterey / Cannery Row – Fishermen’s mural (# 0061) This particular section of Cannery Row is called <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=55191" rel="noreferrer nofollow">McAbee Beach</a></u> in honor of a failure by John McAbee, who purchased the beach around 1900 and planned (but failed) to create a small tourist attraction here of cottages and rental boats.

There is no explanation for the simple mural of fishermen, but a nearby placard notes that Portugese whalers used this beach in the mid-1800s for catching whales to extract the oil for lamps, until that failed due to the discovery of kerosene in the late 1800’s. And then, after McAbee’s efforts failed, the beach became the home for a Chinese fishing village that led to the sardine industry. So, there is a long history fishing being launched from this beach.

Note that there appears to be either a seal or an otter a little past the break water. It appears to be floating on its back, so probably an otter.

Monterey / Cannery Row – native recognition (# 0066) Though I doubt it’s ever read by the passing tourists, I was glad to see a marker documenting that for a very long period prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early 1600’s, there were natives who utilized the plentiful fish, seals, and other animals and plants available in the area for food, shelter, and improvised boats.

Monterey / Cannery Row remnants (# 0062) I was pleased to see that not all of the remains of the canneries and piers have been converted to modern tourist sites…

Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf distressed seal? (# 0060) When I walked out on the wharf there were a small number of people watching this seal. When I came back 20 minutes later, this seal was roughly in the same spot, acting weird. It would wander closer to the water and then back up, and was bobbing its head up and down, and did this for a couple of minutes. I looked around the wharf to see it there was someone there in some sort of uniform to report it, but of course one can never find an ‘official’ when one wants to.

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment - returning (# 0024) Life after the war, returning to no home and with no resources, to hostile environments that were slow to accommodate their former neighbors. Per information on a related <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">site</a></u>, due to hostility there was no reestablishment of the Japanese community of Castroville, though some went to work in the canneries in nearby Monterey.
