The Monterey County Youth Museum (MCYM) is an educational and fun destination for families in Monterey, California. It is a place where people of all ages can explore, discover and learn about the rich and diverse history of Monterey County. Located in the heart of historic downtown Monterey, the museum features a variety of interactive exhibits, activities and workshops that explore the history and culture of the area.

Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).
Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf distressed seal? (# 0060) When I walked out on the wharf there were a small number of people watching this seal. When I came back 20 minutes later, this seal was roughly in the same spot, acting weird. It would wander closer to the water and then back up, and was bobbing its head up and down, and did this for a couple of minutes. I looked around the wharf to see it there was someone there in some sort of uniform to report it, but of course one can never find an ‘official’ when one wants to.

Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture. When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).
Pacific Grove / Stanford Marine station (# 0038) Late December afternoon, taken from the Pacific Grove Vista Point.. Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment – desert prison (# 0020) Description of life at the internment camp in Poston, AZ, where the Castroville Japanese were sent from the Salianas Rodeo Grounds detention center. Life for the next three years was in the long rows of barracks pictured here, in a desolate and remote spot not far from the Colorado River. The local tribes in Arizona are working through the <u><a href="https://www.postonpreservation.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Poston Community Alliance</a></u> to honor the history of the Japanese and their work with the tribes during their internment. Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment - returning (# 0024) Life after the war, returning to no home and with no resources, to hostile environments that were slow to accommodate their former neighbors. Per information on a related <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">site</a></u>, due to hostility there was no reestablishment of the Japanese community of Castroville, though some went to work in the canneries in nearby Monterey. Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment cycle (# 0028) A fascinating, and very under-utilized, historical site in Castroville, which is on the way to Monterey, CA. I fortunately discovered it, and a number of other places related to Japanese and Chinese history in California, just by searching through <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">The Historical Marker Database</a></u>. Japanese laborers had been migrating to this area since the late 1800’s as tenant farmers (the primary crop remains artichokes). By the 1930’s there were enough Japanese families that they wanted a schoolhouse to preserve history and also to provide a community for their children that was safe from the local hostility. The “Japanese Schoolhouse,” founded in 1936, was short-lived since in 1942 all Japanese were ordered to be interred, due to the war with Japan. Historical Marker <u>”<a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=63772" rel="noreferrer nofollow">For the Sake of the Children</a>”</u> provides a good description of the history of the area. Note that the schoolhouse is sometimes referred to as the Castroville Japanese Language School. Use the <i>Castroville Japanese Schoolhouse</i> tag to connect the pictures.
