The Tulare Historical Museum in Tulare, California is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the Tulare County area. The museum was founded in 1981 and is located in downtown Tulare, in the historic Tule River Valley. The museum is housed in the historic Carnegie Library, a red brick building originally built in 1914.

The museum's permanent collection includes artifacts and documents that tell the stories of the early settlers to the area and the region's agricultural and ranching history. Visitors to the museum can also explore the region's Native American, Spanish and Mexican cultural heritage. The museum also houses a large collection of historic photographs.

In addition to its permanent collection, the Tulare Historical Museum hosts temporary exhibits, lectures, and special events. Educational programs are also offered throughout the year. Visitors can explore the museum's exhibits and learn about the region's history. The museum is open seven days a week and admission is free.

ABLE TO LEAP TALL FENCES ON A SINGLE BOUND Hanford, Ca.

Tulare / historic downtown (# 2444) Tulare is a town of 69,000 in Tulare County and is only 8 miles south of the much larger city (141,000 pop.) of Visalia. The economy of the area is primarily agricultural.

The historic downtown section of Tulare was pleasant, with tree lined streets and well-preserved historic buildings such as this one. Unfortunately the only thing I could find about the building was a real estate site listing it as built in 1907.

Tulare / Linder & Harlow mural (# 2435) Though not a great picture due to shade, I found this mural of the local Linder &amp; Harlow Carriage and Wagon Repository to be fascinating, since I’ve never seen anything about the sorts of facilities that would have been built for carriages. The mural was painted by a local in 1998 and one of the men on it is Reynold Linder who immigrated from German to Tulare in 1888. The mural is on the Linder building, though I’m almost certain this Linder building is not the same as the original Repository.

Tulare / historic Elks Building downtown (# 2445) Another very well-preserved building in historic downtown Tulare. Again I could not find any information n the building, but a real estate site does list it as built in 1925.

B-17G Flying Fortress "Preston’s Pride" Operation Crossroads Mefford Field
Tulare, California

Assigned to the 509th Composite Group and participated in Operation Crossroads as drone controller for atomic tests in the summer of 1946. B-17G 105-VE 44-85738 was used as the mother ship that led 12 drone B-17s thru the fallout cloud to collect information for further study.

In 1958, General Maurice Preston flew the B-17 to his hometown of Tulare, CA. Here, the town affectionately dubbed the plane “Preston’s Pride”.

This B-17 Flying Fortress is a gift from the U.S.A.F. to AMVETS Post No. 56 as a memorial to all men and women of Tulare who served their country World War II. It is also a tribute to our own Major General Maurice Preston, Operations Chief U.S.A.F. Retired, who flew this plane to Tulare on August 5, 1958.
