The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society (SFMHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, study and promotion of the history of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Founded in 1883, the SFMHS is the oldest cultural institution in San Francisco and is one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the United States.
The SFMHS has three main areas of focus: education, research, and public programming. Through educational activities, the SFMHS works to bring the history of San Francisco and the Bay Area to life for students of all ages. Through research, the SFMHS works to collect, preserve, and make available for public use primary source material about the history of San Francisco and the Bay Area, including photographs, documents, and artifacts. Through public programming, the SFMHS works to make the history of San Francisco and the Bay Area accessible to all by providing engaging, informative programs and events that are both entertaining and educational.
The SFMHS is located in the historic Presidio Trust Building at the Presidio of San Francisco and offers a variety of exhibitions, programs, and activities throughout the year, including walking and trolley tours, lectures, and historic house tours. The SFMHS also offers a variety of educational resources, including a library, a research center, and a website. In addition, the SFMHS publishes books, guides, and other materials about San Francisco and the Bay Area’s history.
The SFMHS is a member of the American Association for State and Local History, the American Association of Museums, and the American Alliance of Museums.
