The Sangamon County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Springfield, Illinois and its surrounding areas. Founded in 1876, the Society operates out of a historic building in downtown Springfield, which houses a research library, archives, and a museum filled with artifacts and memorabilia from the county's past. The Society is a non-profit organization, supported by memberships, donations, grants, and contributions.

The Society provides a wide range of services, including educational programs, lectures, and special events. The research library offers a wealth of information, including historical records, books, photographs, and other documents. The archives houses an impressive collection of records, photographs, newspapers, and other materials related to Sangamon County's past. The museum displays a variety of artifacts, ranging from Native American artifacts to Civil War memorabilia.

The Society also promotes the preservation of historical landmarks in the region. It has played an important role in the restoration of many of the area's historic buildings, such as the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum and the Old State Capitol.
