The Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society (RIHS) is a non-profit organization located in Rock Island, Illinois that is dedicated to preserving the history of the Rock Island Arsenal. The Rock Island Arsenal is a U.S. Army installation located on an island in the Mississippi River. It was established in 1862 and is one of the oldest continuously active military installations in the country. The RIHS was founded in 1982 and is committed to educating the public about the Arsenal's history, preserving its artifacts, and maintaining its grounds. The RIHS is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom are retired or former military personnel. The RIHS offers a variety of educational programs to the public, including guided tours of the Arsenal and its grounds, lectures and seminars, and special events such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. The RIHS also publishes a quarterly newsletter and maintains an online archive of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts relating to the Arsenal. The RIHS is dedicated to preserving the history of the Rock Island Arsenal and honoring the men and women who served there.
