NORTH FLORIDA CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOC
JACKSONVILLE, FL
The North Florida Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in Jacksonville, Florida is a non-profit organization that works to promote the preservation and appreciation of the history of railroads in the state. Founded in 1992, it has members throughout the state, and its primary activity is the publication of a newsletter which contains articles about railway history, news about the organization’s activities, and upcoming events. The chapter also hosts annual meetings and other events to further its mission.
The chapter is particularly interested in the history of the railroads that once ran through the state, such as the Atlantic Coast Line, the Seaboard Air Line, and the Florida East Coast Railway. It works to preserve the history of these lines and to share it with the public. To this end, it has hosted meetings at sites of historical interest, such as the old Atlantic Coast Line office building in downtown Jacksonville, and has organized railfan trips to experience firsthand the sites, sounds, and smells of railroading.
The chapter is also actively involved in the restoration and preservation of rolling stock, and has been responsible for the restoration of numerous locomotives, passenger cars, and freight cars. Some of these have been donated to museums and heritage railways, while others are part of the chapter’s own collection, which is housed at the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish. The chapter also works to educate the public about railway history and to promote an appreciation for the role of railroads in the development of the state.
