The Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum in Valdez, Alaska is a unique museum that houses and displays objects related to the history of Valdez and the surrounding area. It was founded by Maxine and Jesse Whitney in 1969 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The museum is located in the historic Valdez-Cordova Historic District and is housed in the former home of Jesse Whitney and his wife Maxine, which was built in 1911. The museum features a variety of artifacts, documents and photographs related to the history of the area, as well as exhibits about the life and times of the Whitney family. The museum also offers educational programs for all ages, as well as special events throughout the year.

The museum's collection includes items from the 1940s to the present day, with a focus on the culture and history of the area. So full... Glaucous-winged Gull - Larus glaucescens These were all over the salmon runs. Most seemed sated.

All in a row Black-legged Kittiwake - Rissa tridactyla These were all over the hatchery area in Valdez. Many were quite tame. It looked like nesting was just starting on 15 August 2023. I guess they nest late in order to take advantage of the salmon runs. A different frame from a series posted previously.
No salmon for you! American Black Bear - Ursus americanus This young bear was informed that, no, he could not come into the hatchery and dine on the fresh salmon buffet.

No ears Harbor Seal - Phoca vitulina A few of these were hanging around the Valdez hatchery. They kept well clear of the huge Steller Sea Lions.
Searching for salmon Steller Sea Lion - Eumetopias jubatus A couple of these were foraging in the mass of salmon at the Valdez hatchery. Apparently fussy eaters, they went through the school repeatedly, looking for the tastier salmon species. I think the abundant fish were: Pink Salmon - Oncorhynchus gorbuscha The sea lions were said to be after the tastier, but less common: Coho Salmon - Oncorhynchus kisutch I hope I got those correct!
