The Trust for Architectural Easements in Washington DC (TAE) is a non-profit organization that works to protect the architectural heritage of the nation’s capital. Founded in 2005, its mission is to preserve the historic character of Washington DC’s neighborhoods, buildings, and monuments. The organization works to preserve the city’s architectural legacy by preserving historic buildings, structures, and sites through the use of conservation easements.

A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a property owner and a third-party organization, such as TAE, that allows for the protection of historic and architectural features of the property. The property owner continues to own and use the property, but agrees to restrictions in order to protect the integrity of the property’s historic resources. These restrictions can include limiting demolition, alterations, or changes to the property.

TAE works to identify properties in Washington DC that have significant architectural, historic, or cultural value and then works with the property owners to create and maintain conservation easements. The organization also educates the public on the importance of preserving the city’s architectural heritage and works with local groups, government officials, and other organizations to ensure the long-term preservation of these properties. To date, TAE has helped to preserve over 100 buildings and structures in Washington DC.
