Pseudo-Americanism, grafted onto the old, moldy ground of the city, here exploded as the luxuriant, but empty and colorless, vegetation of a tawdry, shoddy pretentiousness. Cheap, poorly constructed apartment houses with grotesque facades, covered with monstrous stuccowork made of cracked gypsum, could be seen there. Crooked old suburban cottages received hastily patched-together portals that only upon closer inspection were unmasked as miserable imitations of metropolitan installations. Defective, blurry, and dirty windows, distorting in wavering refractions a dark reflection of the street, the unfinished wood of the doors, the gray atmosphere of those barren interiors, depositing spiderwebs and clumps of dust on high shelves and shabby, crumbling walls, imprinted on the shops here the stamp of a wild Klondike.&quot;
