The Otero Museum Association in La Junta, Colorado is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1971. The museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history, culture, and heritage of Southeast Colorado. The museum houses a collection of more than 20,000 artifacts, photographs, and documents from the local area. The museum building is a historic former elementary school that was built in 1923. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The building houses a variety of exhibits, including a reconstructed one-room schoolhouse, a military exhibit, and a replica of a homesteader’s cabin. The Otero Museum Association is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free, although donations are accepted. The museum is a great resource for those interested in the history and culture of Southeast Colorado.
