Bents Old Fort Historical Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and educating about the history of Bent's Old Fort. Located in La Junta, Colorado, the association is responsible for maintaining the fort and its grounds, as well as providing educational and interpretive services.
Bent's Old Fort was originally a trading post established in the 1830s by William and Charles Bent, two brothers of Mexican descent. The fort was the first permanent settlement in Colorado and a key trading spot in the American West. It was an important hub for the trappers, traders, and travelers of the Santa Fe Trail.
The fort was abandoned in 1849 and in the late 1800s, it was partially reconstructed and opened to the public as a tourist attraction. In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps began restoring the fort to its original condition. In 1960, the property was designated as a National Historic Site, and in 1974, the Bents Old Fort Historical Association was formed.
Today, the association oversees the preservation and maintenance of the fort, as well as its grounds and the surrounding area. It also offers educational programs, tours, and special events. The association is dedicated to preserving the history of the fort and educating visitors about its significance.
