The San Benito County Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in Hollister, California. Founded in 1962, the Society's mission is to preserve and promote the history and culture of San Benito County. The Society's collection includes over 3,000 photographs, maps, books, artifacts, documents, and oral histories that provide a unique glimpse into San Benito County's past.

The Society also operates a museum and research center, which are open to the public. The museum features an extensive collection of artifacts and ephemera from the county's past, including artifacts from the Gold Rush era, Native American artifacts, and artifacts from San Benito County's agricultural and ranching history. The research center contains a wide range of historical documents, maps, census data, and more.

The Society also offers educational programs and field trips for students and schools, as well as public lectures and special events throughout the year. They also host a variety of volunteer opportunities, from docents to archivists.

Salinas / Oldenburg sculpture (# 0070) A mediocre shot because it wasn’t the reason I was visiting the park, but in the background (and partially hidden) is “Hat in Three Stages of Landing” by Claes Oldenburg. Pulling together various sources that I ran across, the Oldenburg hats ended up in Salinas at this location mainly because of a national effort to fund art for smaller cities in the 1970s, and Oldenburg had an interest in creating art for the people. The park is next to the Salinas Rodeo ground and the hat motif was chosen to represent the stages of a hat coming to landing when thrown from a horse by a rodeo cowboy. The Oldenburg work was installed in 1978, deteriorated somewhat around 2000 and then was refurbished in 2013. To honor that Salinas is called “Salad Bowl of the World” for all of lettuce grown there, the hats are perforated. The Roadside America link below has more detail.
