The Monterey State Historic Park Association (MSHPA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the history of Monterey, California. Located in the heart of Old Monterey, the MSHPA works to preserve and interpret the city’s history through education, research and conservation. Established in 1981, the MSHPA has worked to preserve and protect more than 20 historic sites in Monterey, including the Custom House, Larkin House, and the Monterey Presidio.

In addition to preserving and protecting these sites, the MSHPA also develops and presents interpretive programs, guided tours, and special events. Through these programs, the MSHPA works to engage people in the history of the city, while also providing educational and recreational opportunities. The MSHPA also partners with local schools and organizations, providing educational programs and activities.

The MSHPA also serves as a cultural hub for the city, hosting a variety of events such as lectures, concerts, and theatrical performances. The MSHPA also serves as a gateway for visitors, providing information about Monterey’s history and attractions.

The MSHPA is funded by grants, donations, and memberships. Through their work, the MSHPA continues to preserve and promote the history of Monterey, California.

Salinas / “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” (# 0076) The “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” in Salinas, near the Rodeo Grounds where Monterey area Japanese were involuntarily assembled before being sent to internment camps (mostly to the <u><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/donbrr/9640061740">Poston Internment camp</a></u>) during WWII. There is an an excellent Youtube (link below) depicting this garden and then with extensive pictures of the makeshift barracks on the rodeo grounds. Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).
Monterey / Cannery Row – native recognition (# 0066) Though I doubt it’s ever read by the passing tourists, I was glad to see a marker documenting that for a very long period prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early 1600’s, there were natives who utilized the plentiful fish, seals, and other animals and plants available in the area for food, shelter, and improvised boats.
Monterey / Fisherman’s Wharf distressed seal? (# 0060) When I walked out on the wharf there were a small number of people watching this seal. When I came back 20 minutes later, this seal was roughly in the same spot, acting weird. It would wander closer to the water and then back up, and was bobbing its head up and down, and did this for a couple of minutes. I looked around the wharf to see it there was someone there in some sort of uniform to report it, but of course one can never find an ‘official’ when one wants to.

Pacific Grove / Point Pinos Lighthouse (# 0045) The <u><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Pinos_Lighthouse" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Point Pinos Lighthouse </a></u>, lit since 1855 and still in operation. (Despite having been in-and-out of the Monterey area since 1967, I’ve never done the tour of the lighthouse – the beach area is too distracting!).
PG Point Pinos / golf deer (# 0051) Deer, grazing, at the Pacific Grove (PG) Municipal golf course which overlooks Point Pinos. As I said in a post of a couple of month’s back, I was surprised that all of the people watching stood back, and the drivers going by all slowed down appropriately. Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture. When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).
