The Carmel Mission ... at the Mission Courtyard at the Gardens of the World. On the walls of the portico surrounding the courtyard are paintings of each of the 21 missions founded by the Franciscan Order between 1769 and 1833. They were placed about 30 miles apart (the distance of a days journey then) between San Diego and Sonoma; the total distance is about 650 miles. Thousand Oaks
