I was born at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, part of the old Jersey City Medical Center -- the cluster of yellow brick buildings at lower right that includes the stepped building. Jersey City Medical Center was one of the first medical centers in the United States. FDR dedicated this campus in 1936. Care was free. My mother remembers having a bike accident as a kid and riding her bike over by herself to the medical center to get stitches, no questions asked. The hospital has moved to new digs and the iconic Art Deco buildings have now been converted to condos.
