The crow lands, investigates, then proceeds to grip the bottom of the bag with his beak and tip it upside down. What looks like two bright yellow wrapped shapes slide onto the street where he grips one edge to unwrap it, push off the top (shown here), take the filling (cheese square on a sausage patty?) and fly a short distance away to find out if the filling is to his taste. Lettering, names, and weathering all point to the 1970s How different the economy, cost of living, and daily preoccupations and aspirations then versus now. Seeing this time traveler from a business long gone hearkens back to world and local events from about 50 years ago. The street name is Railroad Street, but the last passenger service ended in the early 1970s and the final freight train was later in the 1980s. By the early 2000s the rail-trail conversion was well underway on the CIS (Clinton, Ionia, Shiawassee) east-west route for joggers, walkers, and bicyclists (skiers in winter). Omelette smiles picture-perfect on the diner plate Although a strip of bacon peeks out, in the main this is a vegetable-filled special omelette at this long-time downtown diner, once a favorite of farmers doing business in the town or people at the twice weekly stockyard sales (ending in the 1970s). Ownership has changed over the life of the building, but the current people have been at it for a generation, so it has a familiar atmosphere, well-loved and with a steady stream of loyal customers, too.
