Robert Louis Stevenson House, located at 530 Houston Street in Monterey, California, is a historic house museum owned and operated by the Monterey State Historic Park. The house was built in 1879 as a summer home for the Scottish author and poet Robert Louis Stevenson and his family. The house was constructed in the Italianate style, with a two-story main house and a two-story wing.

The house features many of the original furnishings and decorations, including furniture, artwork, and other personal items which Stevenson had brought with him from Scotland. There are also many items that were made specifically for the house by local craftsman. The house and grounds are open to the public, providing a unique glimpse into the life of the famous author and his time in Monterey.

The house is surrounded by a large garden, which Stevenson had planted and tended himself. The garden is filled with flowers, shrubs, and trees, as well as a variety of birds and other wildlife. The grounds also feature a large pond, a fountain, and a terrace, all of which Stevenson was particularly proud of.

Visitors to the house can learn about Stevenson's life and work, as well as his time in Monterey. The house is open for guided tours and educational programs, as well as for special events and receptions. The house is also the site of an annual Robert Louis Stevenson festival every summer. The house and grounds are also available to rent for private gatherings.

Startrails of Auriga over Monterey Bay Thirty-Six 20 second exposures (12 minutes) combined using the Startrails.exe program. Auriga can be seen in the North-Eastern sky. The green trail in the bay is from a passing boat.
Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).
Monterey / Cannery Row – Fishermen’s mural (# 0061) This particular section of Cannery Row is called <u><a href="https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=55191" rel="noreferrer nofollow">McAbee Beach</a></u> in honor of a failure by John McAbee, who purchased the beach around 1900 and planned (but failed) to create a small tourist attraction here of cottages and rental boats. There is no explanation for the simple mural of fishermen, but a nearby placard notes that Portugese whalers used this beach in the mid-1800s for catching whales to extract the oil for lamps, until that failed due to the discovery of kerosene in the late 1800’s. And then, after McAbee’s efforts failed, the beach became the home for a Chinese fishing village that led to the sardine industry. So, there is a long history fishing being launched from this beach. ******* Note that there appears to be either a seal or an otter a little past the break water. It appears to be floating on its back, so probably an otter.

Pacific Grove / contrasts (# 0041) BTW, this picture is a good example of how direction on the Monterey Peninsula can be confusing, as I note in a comment below. We're actually looking NNE here across Monterey Bay -- the Pacific ocean is a little behind me, off my left shoulder. One way to get oriented is to note that the towers of Moss Landing generating plant are faintly visible near the left side of the picture. When I was stationed in Monterey in '67-'68, my barracks window looked over the bay and the sun set behind the barracks, seemingly over land (over the peninsula).

Castroville / Japanese Schoolhouse internment – desert prison (# 0020) Description of life at the internment camp in Poston, AZ, where the Castroville Japanese were sent from the Salianas Rodeo Grounds detention center. Life for the next three years was in the long rows of barracks pictured here, in a desolate and remote spot not far from the Colorado River. The local tribes in Arizona are working through the <u><a href="https://www.postonpreservation.org" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Poston Community Alliance</a></u> to honor the history of the Japanese and their work with the tribes during their internment.
