The Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society is a volunteer-run organization based in Vienna, Illinois. Established in 1983, the group's mission is to preserve, collect and share the history of Johnson County and the surrounding area. It is dedicated to the study of genealogy, history and culture for the benefit of the public. The Society operates a museum and research library, which contain a vast collection of local artifacts, photographs, documents, family histories and other materials. The library houses a variety of resources, including books, microfilm, databases, indexes, maps and periodicals.

The Society sponsors several programs, events and activities throughout the year, including educational lectures, workshops and genealogical research classes. In addition, the group sponsors the Johnson County Pioneer Days, an annual event that celebrates the area's rich cultural and historical heritage. The Society also works in partnership with local schools and other organizations to promote awareness of the area's history and to foster a greater appreciation of local heritage.

Great Egret - Mermet Lake, IL This white long-legged wader was in search of a meal in the swamp just outside the dyke on Mermet Lake. Great egrets are very closely related to Great Blue Herons and not their smaller white counter parts like the Snowy and Cattle Egrets. It just so happens that they are all white. The name Egret is really a place holder for white wading birds rather than a family group. These birds were once highly prized for they're breeding plumage and hunted world wide.

Vienna Times Building - Vienna, IL The Vienna Times Building is located on the town square in Vienna, IL. The Times has relocated a couple of blocks away, so this is now home to Family Pizza which is written but faded below the Mountain Dew sign.

If you look at the photo full-sized, take a look at the door on the left. The address is 309 1/2 and the window above says Dentist Upstairs. When I looked in the door, it was just a staircase, and I suppose that part of the building is not used.
