The Fox River Trolley Association Inc. (FRTA) is a non-profit organization located in South Elgin, Illinois, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic trolleys and railcars. Founded in 1975, the FRTA is a volunteer-run organization that operates a museum and trolley ride service throughout the Fox Valley area.
The FRTA’s collection includes several vintage trolleys and railcars, including two former Chicago “L” cars, a former Milwaukee streetcar, and a former Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee interurban car. The FRTA owns and operates a trolley line in South Elgin along the former Elgin, Aurora and Fox River Electric Company line. The line operates two trolleys on a five and a half mile loop, with several stops at local attractions, including the Fox River Trolley Museum.
The FRTA offers a variety of educational and recreational activities, including trolley rides, special events, educational programs, and school field trips. The FRTA also partners with local businesses and organizations to host events, such as their annual “Trolley Days” and “Christmas Express” rides.
The FRTA’s membership is open to anyone interested in the history and restoration of historic trolleys and railcars. Members have access to the association's library, archives, and workshops. The FRTA also offers volunteer opportunities in all areas of the organization.
