The St. Elmo Historical Society (SEHS) is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and collecting the historical artifacts of St. Elmo, Illinois. Founded in 1992, SEHS is headquartered in the former St. Elmo Elementary School building, which was built in 1919 and is now a museum and archive. SEHS collects and preserves artifacts, documents, photographs, and oral histories to tell the story of St. Elmo’s past.

SEHS operates a museum, which houses a variety of exhibits featuring local artifacts, such as farming equipment, clothing, and tools used by St. Elmo’s early settlers. The museum also displays photographs and documents from the town’s history, such as early school records and town hall meeting minutes.

SEHS hosts several events throughout the year, including a summer festival, a fall corn maze, a Civil War reenactment, and a Christmas open house. In addition, SEHS sponsors educational programs for children and adults, such as lectures, field trips, and workshops on local history.

SEHS also works to preserve the town’s historic buildings, such as the old St. Elmo Schoolhouse, the St. Elmo Railroad Depot, and the old St. Elmo Town Hall. SEHS also owns and operates the St. Elmo Cemetery, which is the final resting place of many St. Elmo pioneers.

SEHS is committed to preserving the history of St. Elmo and educating the public about its heritage. The society’s members are proud of their town and its heritage, and are dedicated to preserving it for future generations to enjoy.
