WITHERS - MAGUIRE HOUSE

Withers-Maguire House is a historic site located in Ocoee, Florida. The house was built in 1888 by a prominent local businessman named Dr. John B. Withers, and was later purchased by the Maguire family in 1910. The house is a two-story Gothic Revival structure with a distinctive tower and wraparound porch. The interior of the house features decorative woodwork, stained glass windows, and antique furnishings.

The house is significant for its role in the history of Ocoee and the surrounding area. It served as a community center for social gatherings and events, and was also used as a polling place during elections in the early 20th century. In 1920, the house was the site of a violent racial confrontation known as the Ocoee Massacre, which resulted in the deaths of several African American residents and the forced exile of many others.

Today, Withers-Maguire House is open to the public for tours and events. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is maintained by the Withers-Maguire House Historical Preservation Society. The society works to preserve the history and legacy of the house and its role in the community, as well as to educate visitors about the events of the Ocoee Massacre and their lasting impact on the region.
