Monte Cristo Cottage is a historic home located in Waterford, Connecticut. Built in 1868, the house is named after the famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. The original owner, John Osbourne, was a wealthy merchant from New York, and the house was designed in a French Renaissance style.
The house is a two-story brick structure with a steeply pitched roof and gabled end. It has an asymmetrical facade, with a central entrance and a large round tower on the right side. The windows are tall and narrow, and the doors are decorated with elaborate wood carvings. The exterior is painted in a pale yellow, with green shutters and trim.
Inside, the house is filled with period furnishings, including a mahogany staircase, crystal chandeliers, and ornate French wallpaper. There are four main rooms, including a grand parlor, a formal dining room, a library, and a conservatory.
The property also includes a carriage house, a barn, and a large garden area. In recent years, the house has been used as a wedding venue, with a banquet hall and a terraced garden.
Monte Cristo Cottage is an important example of 19th-century architecture in Connecticut, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
