The Newtown Historical Society was established in 1953 with the purpose of preserving the history of Newtown, Connecticut. Located in the center of town, the Society occupies a historic building known as the Matthew Curtiss House, which dates to 1740 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Newtown, Connecticut. Its collections include over 1,400 linear feet of archival material, including thousands of documents, photographs, and artifacts, as well as a library of over 3,000 volumes. The Society’s archives and library are open to the public for research by appointment.
The Society also hosts educational programs, events, and exhibitions to promote an appreciation of the town’s history. It has hosted lectures, walking tours, and workshops for the public, as well as educational programs for students. The Society also sponsors an annual town-wide history fair, which attracts hundreds of visitors each year.
The Society is a member of the Connecticut League of Historical Societies and is supported by memberships, donations, grants, and fundraising activities. It is staffed by a small group of dedicated volunteers and a part-time director.
The Newtown Historical Society’s work is essential to the preservation of Newtown’s history, and it serves as an important resource for historical research and education.
