The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, located in New London, Connecticut, is an impressive and expansive cultural institution situated in the heart of downtown New London. Founded in 1926 by Harriet Allyn in memory of her father, philanthropist Lyman Allyn, the museum has since grown to become one of the most popular attractions in the city. The museum consists of three main buildings, all of which are connected by a glass-covered walkway. The original building, the Lyman Allyn House, is a Colonial Revival structure that was Lyman Allyn’s home and now houses the museum’s permanent collection. The other two buildings – a modern art wing and a new wing dedicated to American decorative art – provide additional space for special exhibitions and educational activities.
The museum houses an impressive collection of over 17,000 objects, ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to modern works by American and European masters. Highlights include a large selection of works by John Singleton Copley, Albert Bierstadt, and Thomas Cole; an extensive collection of American decorative arts; and an array of European and American paintings and sculpture from the 16th century to the present day. In addition to its impressive permanent collection, the museum hosts a variety of changing exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs throughout the year.
