The New London County Historical Society (NLCHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the history of New London County and Southeastern Connecticut. Established in 1899, NLCHS is the oldest historical society in the state of Connecticut.
NLCHS houses a variety of collections, including artifacts, books, documents, photographs, and maps. The Society's research library contains over 20,000 volumes focused on the history of New London County and Southeastern Connecticut. Additionally, NLCHS hosts educational programs and lectures, as well as genealogy workshops and archival tours.
NLCHS is located in New London, Connecticut and operates out of the Shaw Mansion, a historic property built in 1756. The mansion is open to the public and features a variety of exhibits, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and the Golden Age of Whaling. The Society also has a museum shop that sells books, souvenirs, and other merchandise related to the history of New London County.
NLCHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that depends on donations and membership fees to support its mission. The Society is also supported by a dedicated staff, volunteers, and Board of Directors. NLCHS is actively involved in the local community and works in partnership with several other organizations to promote the history and culture of New London County.
