Titan I Missile Launch Keys and Padlock Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Titan I Missile Launch Keys and Padlock This padlock secured one of two metal boxes containing missile launch codes. Each launch controller had the combination for one lock. In the event of nuclear war, the controllers would unlock the boxes and verify the launch codes. Then these keys would have been turned simultaneously by two airmen sitting at separate consoles to launch the missiles. These keys are from one of the Lowry Titan control centers.
“Little Boy" Atomic Bomb Replica Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum “Little Boy" Atomic Bomb This is a replica of the bomb that the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped over the city of Hiroshima, Japan 75 years ago on August 6. The explosion killed about 40% of the residents. This was the first use of a nuclear weapon in war. Three days later, the US dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II.
B53 Nuclear Bomb Loading Dummy (Type BDU-9/E) Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum The B53 was a high-yield bunker buster thermonuclear weapon deployed on Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers by the United States during the Cold War. With a yield of nine (9) megatons, the B53 was the most powerful weapon in the U.S. nuclear arsenal circa 1976. The B53 Bomb Dummy Unit (BDU) was used to train bomb technicians on how to upload and download the B53 on to and down from the carrier aircraft. The bomb technicians also can monitor the signal from the aircraft to the bomb once it is uploaded thus verifying connection with the aircraft. B43 Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum For more than twenty years the B43 was the United States' air-dropped nuclear weapon used by a wide variety of aircraft. The weapon was developed in 1956 by Los Alamos National Laboratory, entering service in April 1961. Total production was 2,000 weapons, ending in 1965. The B43 was built in three variants: Mod 0, Mod 1, and Mod 2, each with five yield options. Explosive yields varied from 70 kilotons of TNT to 1 megaton of TNT. The B-43 could be delivered at altitudes as low as 300 ft, with fusing options for air burst, ground burst, free fall, contact, or laydown delivery - a mode of deploying a free-fall nuclear weapon in which the bomb's fall is slowed by parachute so that it actually lands on the ground before detonating. Aircraft that could carry the weapon included most USAF, USN and USMC fighters, bombers and attack aircraft, including the A-3 Skywarrior, A-4 Skyhawk, A-5 Vigilante, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair II, B-47 Stratojet, B-52 Stratofortress, F-100 Super Saber, F-105 Thunderchief, F-4 Phantom Il, F-111 Aardvark, FB-111A, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the F/A-18 Hornet. B28RE Nuclear Bomb Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum Mk28/B28RE Hydrogen Bomb The Mk28 hydrogen bomb, although first produced in 1958, remained an active item until 1991. It was designed to be carried by various fighter and bomber aircraft (F-100, F-104, F-105, B-47, B-52, and B-66). This weapon is capable of a ground or air burst and may be carried internally or externally, with a free-fall or parachute retarded drop, depending upon its configuration. The W28 small diameter, light weight thermonuclear warhead in Mk28 became the most versatile and widely used design ever adopted by the United States. This tactical and strategic thermonuclear bomb had the longest US service duration (33 years) and 2nd largest production run of any U.S. weapon design with over 4500 produced. The last weapons were retired from the U.S. arsenal in 1991. The Mk-28 employed the "Building Block" principle, permitting various combinations of components to be combined: B28EX -Carried externally by F-100, F-105, and F-4; no parachute. B28RE - Carried externally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute and one 28 ft. ribbon chute. B28IN - Carried internally by B-52 and F-105; no parachute. B28RI - Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot parachute, one 16.5-ft. ribbon extraction chute, one 64-ft. solid chute, and one 30-in. stabilization chute. B28FI - Carried internally; equipped with one 4-ft. pilot chute, one 16-ft. and one 24-ft. chute. This Mk28RE was used at Lowry to teach students how to load and unload the weapon on different types of aircraft. It is displayed underneath the F-100 Super Sabre, one of the primary aircraft used as a delivery system.
