SLOSS Furnaces in Birmingham, AL, is a National Historic Landmark that has been preserved as a museum and park. The furnaces were built in 1882 by James Withers Sloss, a successful local industrialist, for the production of pig iron. The furnaces operated for over eighty years and played an important role in the development of the iron and steel industry in the region.

The furnaces are composed of two blast furnaces, each measuring over sixty feet tall. They were built using locally mined ore and coke, and were heated to temperatures of up to 2000°F. The furnaces were capable of producing up to 10 tons of iron each day. The molten iron was then poured into sand molds to form finished products like castings, stoves, and pipes.

Today, the furnaces are open to the public as a museum and park. Visitors can tour the furnaces and learn about their history and how they were used in the iron and steel industry. There are also trails and open spaces for visitors to explore and enjoy. The park also hosts events and activities throughout the year, from educational programs to music and art festivals.

SLOSS Furnaces is an important part of Birmingham’s history and a testament to the region’s industrial heritage. It is a popular destination for visitors of all ages and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and enjoy the history of the iron and steel industry in the area.
