The Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society (SMHPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Sierra Madre, California. Founded in 1992 by a group of local residents, the Society works to preserve the area’s unique heritage through various programs and initiatives.
SMHPS is committed to preserving the city’s history through the restoration and preservation of its historic buildings and landmarks. This includes the restoration of the city’s oldest house, the Wistaria House, which was built in 1887 and is now a museum. The Society also works to preserve the city’s natural beauty by maintaining its parks and trails, as well as its many creeks and streams.
The Society’s mission also extends to educating the public on Sierra Madre’s history and culture through lectures, tours, and publications. SMHPS also works to protect the city’s historical buildings from damage and destruction through its ordinance and advocacy efforts.
In addition to its preservation activities, SMHPS also sponsors public events throughout the year to celebrate the city’s history and architecture. These events include the annual Wistaria Festival, the Sierra Madre Heritage Festival, and the Sierra Madre Historic Home Tour.
The Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society works to ensure that the history and culture of Sierra Madre will remain alive for generations to come.
