On the walls of the portico surrounding the courtyard are paintings of each of the 21 missions founded by the Franciscan Order between 1769 and 1833.  

They were placed about 30 miles apart (the distance of a days journey then) between San Diego and Sonoma; the total distance is about 650 miles.

The Santa Monica Mountains Natural History Association (SMMNHA) is a non-profit organization based in Malibu, California. Founded in 1963, the SMMNHA is dedicated to the preservation and protection of the natural resources, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding areas. The SMMNHA works in partnership with the National Park Service, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and other public agencies to promote public knowledge and understanding about the region’s natural environment and the importance of preserving it for the future.

The SMMNHA offers a variety of educational programs, such as guided nature hikes, camps and classes for adults and children. They also host special events, such as bird walks, plant walks, and wildflower walks. They offer field trips to local parks, preserves, and other sites of natural beauty in the region.

The SMMNHA also provides volunteer opportunities and internships for individuals interested in helping to protect and preserve the Santa Monica Mountains. Volunteers may help with various tasks, such as trail maintenance, plant identification and mapping, or leading hikes. Interns may assist with research projects, data collection and analysis, and other duties associated with the SMMNHA’s mission.

The SMMNHA is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about the unique natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding areas. Through its volunteer and education programs, the SMMNHA works to foster appreciation and stewardship of the region’s natural resources.
