The South Coast Railroad Museum (SCRM) in Goleta, CA is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to the preservation, restoration, interpretation, and operation of historic railroad equipment. Founded in 1979, SCRM is the largest railroad museum in California and one of the oldest operating museums of its kind in the United States. The museum is home to a variety of historic locomotives, freight and passenger cars, cabooses, and other railroad artifacts.
Visitors to the museum can learn about the history of railroading in Santa Barbara County and the central coast region through interactive exhibits and video presentations. The museum's collection includes a variety of locomotives, such as a Union Pacific GS-4 steam locomotive and a Santa Fe GP-35 diesel locomotive. Also on display are passenger cars, cabooses, freight cars, and other artifacts, including a section of the original Southern Pacific Railroad turntable and a Southern Pacific Railroad caboose.
In addition to its collection, the museum offers a variety of educational programs, guided tours, and special events that focus on the history, technology, and operations of the railroad industry. The museum also hosts an annual Run A Locomotive program which allows visitors to operate an authentic steam locomotive.
The museum is open every day, except for major holidays. Admission to the museum is free, although donations are appreciated. The museum also offers memberships which include unlimited admission and discounts on items from the museum store.
