The Presidio Historical Association (PHA) is a nonprofit organization located in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1967 to preserve and protect the rich history and architectural legacy of the Presidio of San Francisco, a former Spanish and then Mexican military installation and U.S. Army post from 1776 to 1994. The organization works to educate the public about the Presidio’s history, and also to preserve and protect its historic buildings and landscape.
PHA works with the Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, and other organizations to promote historical education and to protect the Presidio’s cultural resources. The organization offers a variety of public programs, including lectures, tours, and special events. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Presidio Historical Association Bulletin.
PHA has also undertaken several restoration projects in the Presidio, including the restoration of the powder magazine, the restoration of the Presidio’s original parade ground, and the restoration of the Presidio’s original barracks. The organization has also worked to preserve the Presidio’s historic buildings, such as the Presidio Officers' Club, the Presidio Chapel, and the Presidio Theater.
In addition to its work in the Presidio, PHA also supports the preservation of other historic sites in San Francisco, such as the Palace of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The organization also sponsors several annual events, including the Presidio Heritage Days celebration.
The Presidio Historical Association is committed to preserving the rich history of the Presidio and to educating the public about its significance.
