The Alameda County Historical Society (ACHS) is a non-profit organization located in Oakland, California. Founded in 1926, it is the oldest historical society in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The mission of ACHS is to promote the understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of Alameda County through research, education, and the preservation of historical artifacts.
The ACHS operates out of the historic Dimond District of Oakland, California, and is housed in the historic Dimond Branch Library, the first public library in Alameda County. It offers a variety of programs and services to the community, including lectures and educational programs, museum tours, genealogical research services, and exhibitions.
The main holdings of the ACHS include photographs, newspaper clippings, artifacts, and other resources related to the history of Alameda County. The ACHS also holds a collection of more than 14,000 books, including rare books, manuscripts, and other materials related to the history of the region. Additionally, the ACHS has an extensive collection of photographs depicting the history of Alameda County, as well as a wide range of archival material documenting the development of the county.
The ACHS also maintains a research library and archives, and offers public access to its holdings. It also offers a variety of publications, including books, pamphlets, and maps, and a free newsletter, Alameda County History. The ACHS also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including lectures, exhibitions, and field trips.
