Northern Cardinal - Sloss Lake, AL There are few birds that are as striking as this Male Northern Cardinal. This bird was flycatching on the shores of Sloss Lake, Alabama I am guessing to feed the young in the nest. He was very focused on the flying insects in the area so much so that we were able to shoot several photos as close range. Cardinals are part of a very large family that includes grosbeaks and tanagers along with several others.

Northern Rough-winged Swallow - Sloss Lake, AL One of the more difficult swallows to identify, this Northern Rough-winged swallow is very plain with Brown and light belly with a very faint chest bar as the best description. They are very similar to Bank Swallows but the latter has a very distinct band on the chest. This was one of a pair resting on the wires at Sloss Lake Park giving us a much better shot than in the air!

Lawrence Co. Courthouse - Moulton, AL This description is taken from the Moulton Courthouse Square Historic District listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1936, the courthouse is designed in the Classical Modern style as is the Bank of Moulton-Lawrence County Archives. This style blended the classical lines and associations of the Classical Revival with the innovative decorative ornamentation of the Art Deco period. Dominant on these courthouses is a sense of verticality and smooth planes. Narrow windows set back from the facades in dark panes help to emphasize this smooth vertical movement. Classically inspired columns or pilasters are also found on these buildings. Ornament is subtle and refined, set in bands around the buildings or topping an entranceway or window. These buildings break with earlier traditions in architecture but clearly employ earlier principles as well. The north and south facades of the Lawrence County Courthouse feature porticoes with entablatures and four fluted columns. Its temple with wings form is faced with limestone. The annex, formerly the county jail, rises to a height of three stories. Like the courthouse, it has a basement. Unlike the courthouse, the annex is built of red brick. It was the unfortunate victim of a misguided restoration in 1955, which contributes to its noncontributing status.

Sequoyah woodcarving - Oakville, AL Indian Mounds This woodcarving status of Sequoyah is at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center. Here is their description:

In the center of the museum is a spectacular wooden statue of the Cherokee legend, Sequoyah, created by David Goodlett, a local artist. Goodlett is known throughout Alabama art circles for his American Indian creations and as the founder of the state’s first woodcarving educational programs. The statue of Sequoyah is the largest piece created by Goodlett. It stands 12 feet high and is carved from a huge white-oak tree trunk. It took Goodlett nearly two years to complete the statue of Sequoyah.

Jesse Owens Childhood Home (Replica) The Jesse Owens Museum in Oakville, AL is a tribute to the Olympic Track and Field great. He captured four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics shattering Hitler's Aryan supremacy theory. The museum pays tribute to his athletic and humanitarian achievements. Also on the grounds of the park are a bronze statue, 1936 Olympic torch replica, a broad jump pit where you can test your own ability, and the Gold Medal tree.

This is a replica of the simple wooden house Jesse Owens lived in at the time of his birth.
