Founded in 1909, Fort Ross Conservancy (FRC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, and interpreting the historic Fort Ross and its surrounding cultural and natural resources. The Conservancy's mission is to "promote the preservation and responsible public use of the diverse cultural and natural resources at Fort Ross and to foster public understanding and appreciation of the site's unique history and significance."
Fort Ross is a former Russian-era fur trading post located along the California coast in Jenner, about 2.5 hours north of San Francisco. The site includes a collection of historical structures, including a Russian-era blockhouse, the Governor's House, a windmill, and the chapel of St. Irene. The fort is also surrounded by a wide variety of natural resources, including grasslands, oak woodlands, redwood forests, and coastal wetlands.
FRC manages and maintains the fort itself, in addition to providing educational programs, public events, and volunteer opportunities. The organization also works in collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure the preservation of the fort’s cultural and natural resources.
With the support of local and state government, non-profit organizations, and community members, FRC continues to work to protect and preserve Fort Ross, as well as to educate the public about its unique history and significance.
