The Monterey County Historical Society (MCHS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1938 to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Monterey County, California. Located in Salinas, California, MCHS is dedicated to educating the public about the unique history of the area, and to preserving the county’s cultural heritage.
MCHS operates numerous historic sites throughout the county, including the Cooper-Molera Adobe, the restored home of three generations of the Cooper family, who were prominent in the area’s early years; the Custom House in Monterey, which served as Sutter’s Fort and the headquarters of the Mexican government in California; and the First Brick House (also known as the Robert Louis Stevenson House) in Monterey. MCHS also manages a museum of local history, which features exhibits of early Monterey County artifacts and documents, as well as a research library with genealogical and historical records.
MCHS offers a variety of educational programs for school groups and adults, including lectures, tours of the Cooper-Molera Adobe, and seminars on the history of the area. The organization also sponsors several annual events, such as the Monterey County Historical Society’s History Day and the Monterey County History Fair. By helping to preserve the county’s unique history, MCHS ensures that the area’s cultural heritage will be passed down to future generations.
