WYOMING FRONTIER PRISON

Wyoming Frontier Prison is a historic prison located in Rawlins, Wyoming. The prison was established in 1901 and operated for over 80 years. The prison was built to be an isolated, self-sufficient prison that could house up to 200 inmates. Inmates were expected to be self-sufficient, growing and harvesting their own food.

The prison walls were constructed of sandstone blocks, standing 20 feet tall and almost two feet thick. The walls were topped with an electrified fence, and the facility was surrounded by a 20-foot deep moat. The prison was home to some of the most notorious criminals in the West, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The prison was originally intended to be a model prison, with inmates learning trades and gaining useful skills. However, the prison quickly became overcrowded and was plagued by violence and abuse. In 1959, the prison was finally closed due to its poor conditions and reputation.

Today, the Wyoming Frontier Prison is a museum and tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the old prison cells, as well as the grounds and surrounding area. The museum hosts various events throughout the year, including historical reenactments and ghost tours. The prison is a unique and interesting piece of Wyoming history and is definitely worth a visit.
