Salinas / “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” (# 0076) The “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” in Salinas, near the Rodeo Grounds where Monterey area Japanese were involuntarily assembled before being sent to internment camps (mostly to the <u><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/donbrr/9640061740">Poston Internment camp</a></u>) during WWII.  There is an an excellent Youtube (link below) depicting this garden and then with extensive pictures of the makeshift barracks on the rodeo grounds.  The Densho Encyclopedia entry on the detention facility also gives an excellent and detailed description.

The Gonzales Historical Preservation Society (GHPS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Gonzales, California and the surrounding area. The GHPS was founded in 1976 and is located in the historic Gonzales Union High School building. The Society’s mission is to preserve and protect the historical resources of Gonzales and the surrounding area.

The GHPS collects and preserves books, maps, photographs, and other materials related to the history of Gonzales and the Central Coast. The Society also sponsors a variety of educational programs and lectures throughout the year, including historical walking tours, book discussions, and film screenings.

The GHPS also works to identify and protect historic buildings and sites in Gonzales, and is involved in a variety of preservation and conservation projects in the area. The Society is also active in public education, providing lectures and workshops on the history of Gonzales and the Central Coast.

The GHPS is run by a volunteer board and staff, and is funded through membership dues, donations, grants and fundraisers. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter and maintains a website, which includes information about the Society and its activities, as well as a calendar of events.

The GHPS is committed to preserving and promoting the history of Gonzales and the Central Coast, and works to ensure that the cultural heritage of the area is passed on to future generations.
