Coast Morning Glory, north coast, SLO county Calystegia macrostegia ssp cyclostegia, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calystegia_macrostegia" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calystegia_macrostegia</a> This flower changes color from pure white when it just opens, then progressively darkens with violet stripes as it ages. This is a very challenging flower to photograph! Many tries before I took this one that I feel is of presentation quality. Hope you like it!
Tidepools & clouds, SLO county North Coast I'm pleased with this photo, the star from yesterday's walk. You are looking down from the sketchy, unmaintained blufftop trail. Those tidepools are just great! The green is likely Mermaid's Hair seaweed, one of our most slippery ones. Not that you are likely to be walking on it here! The pink-tinged pools adjacent are coralline algae. You can see the bedding of the steeply-dipping underlying rocks -- but as usual for the Calif coast, nothing connects! You cannot project these rocks onto the bluffs beyond. The early American geologists tried hard to map the coasts, since those are the only good exposures for much of the state. Result: total frustration! This is the notorious Franciscan melange, which is French for "Total Mess"! GPS map will get you there, or PM me for a bit more help. The blufftop trail here is ± the extension of the mapped (but sketchy) Pt Sierra Nevada trail. Maps of that are online. I parked at the mapped north trailhead. All of this is State Park land, gloriously unsigned and undeveloped. My kind of place!
Near the end of my creek walk. . . -- since I didn't want to wade! Unnamed perennial creek, that the Pt Sierra Nevada trail crosses. Good news: hikers can now cross without wading through a mud-hole! Hint: go right (east) a bit, wind around to avoid the poison-oak thickets. Don't count on your phone to navigate! Looks like someone paved a garden-path, doesn't it? An enchanting spot, on a sunny, not-too-windy day. I've never gone all the way to the ocean: there's a waterfall down a steep, small cliff at the end.
Sky lupine with a gold crown! Lupinus nanus, the common one we see every year on the North Coast. These were the first of the season! The 'crown' was partly fortuitous. But I do have 2 snaps of it, and my newish iP-12 has a nice, bright screen/viewfinder even in bright daylight. I'm very pleased with it as a camera. Especially since it was a 'freebie' from Verizon! OK, incentive to keep us buying service. Our family plan now has 5 members, so monthly bill is not insubstantial!
