Blue Ridge Community College Arboretum is a beautiful outdoor space located in Weyers Cave, Virginia. It covers an area of about 35 acres and has more than 200 varieties of trees, shrubs, and other plants. It was established in 1983 by the horticulture department of Blue Ridge Community College.

The arboretum features several walking trails, benches, and picnic areas. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the well-manicured gardens and admire the variety of flora on display. The arboretum also has a greenhouse where various plants are grown and propagated.

Some of the highlights of the arboretum include the Japanese garden, butterfly garden, water garden, herb garden, and conifer garden. There is also a native plant garden that showcases the beauty and diversity of plants that are native to Virginia.

Savannah Sparrow in Virginia Although these sparrows are found throughout North America, I seldom see them in the Shenandoah Valley. Although the background elements in the image are a bit distracting, they suggest the edges of farm fields which are one of the places the birds can be found. I also liked the way the bird's claws echoed the shape of the barbed wire.

Carolina Wren in Virginia [Explored] I seldom visit the lake near my home that I don't hear the calls of one or more Carolina Wrens, <i>Thryothorus ludovicianus, </i>and this trip was no exception. They are also constantly coming through our yard and closely examining all the places where insects and other food can be found.

Guiding Lights With light falling fast, NS 14Z came hurtling north through Lynnwood and reached us at the N&amp;W signals at Lewis Run, Virginia. These aging US&amp;S signals were ones I had previously thought had come down, but it turned out that CP Lynnwood, the south end of this siding, were the signals that had fallen instead. Save for the addition of the PTC antenna, little at Lewis Run had changed since my visit the year prior. Still, these signals have little time left as replacements strike down more and more of the N&amp;W veterans.

Later this same night, after the remnants of the falling suns light had dissipated, we set up for star trails here. It was a long, long night at these signals to say the least!

...and that also caps off 2023. Quite the year, suffice to say. Fewer photos this year, but big things in the personal life. Pretty wild year. I wonder what's in store for next year... who knows!
