St. Johnsbury, Vermont, is a small town located in the northeast corner of the state in Caledonia County. It is the largest town in the county and is situated along the Connecticut River. The town was founded in 1786 by Ira and Ethan Allen, two Revolutionary War veterans. The town was named after Samuel de Champlain's brother-in-law, Jean de St. Jean, who was a French nobleman.

St. Johnsbury quickly became an important hub for trade and commerce in the region, as it was located at the intersection of two major transportation routes. In 1824, the town was incorporated as St. Johnsbury and was designated as the county seat. It also became the home of Fairbanks Scale Company, which was established in 1823 and went on to become one of the most successful businesses in the country.

In the late 19th century, St. Johnsbury experienced an economic boom, as it became the center of the region’s railroad system. The town was home to several major railroads, including the Central Vermont Railway and the Boston & Maine. This period of growth saw the construction of many of St. Johnsbury’s historic buildings, including the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, a library and museum that was built in 1871.

The town is also home to several unique attractions, including the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium and the St. Johnsbury Art Center. St. Johnsbury is also known for its vibrant cultural scene, with many arts and music events held throughout the year. Today, St. Johnsbury is a charming small town with a rich history and plenty of attractions for visitors to explore.
