The Saint Johnsbury Athenaeum is an historic library and art gallery located in the town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. It was founded in 1871 by Horace Fairbanks, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, and has been open to the public ever since. The Athenaeum is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of books, art, and culture. It houses a collection of over 20,000 books, including rare and antique items, as well as a permanent art gallery featuring works by local and international artists.
The library has many special collections, such as the Fairbanks Collection of manuscripts, maps, and photographs; the Samuel Read Hall Collection of books on education; and the Estes-Winn Collection of Vermont books. The Athenaeum also offers a variety of programs and events, such as author readings, art exhibitions, and educational lectures. The library also serves as a venue for community events.
The building itself is an architectural gem. It was originally built in 1871 in the Romanesque Revival style, but was renovated in the 1920s to add a neoclassical façade.
