Salinas / Japanese WWII detention center (# 0073) The reason I was visiting the park, a memorial commemorating the WWII Japanese Detention Center that was on the Salinas Rodeo grounds, which are visible in the background. It was to these grounds that Japanese of Monterey County, including the residents of the Castroville area noted earlier in these pictures, were detained prior to being sent to Poston for the remainder of the war. <i>This monument is dedicated to the 3,586 Monterey Bay Area residents of Japanese ancestry, most of whom were American citizens, temporarily confined in the Salinas Rodeo Grounds during World War II from April to July 1942. They were detained without charges, trial, or establishment of guilt before being incarcerated in permanent camps, mostly at Poston, Arizona. May such injustice and humiliation never recur. </i>

Salinas / “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” (# 0076) The “Day or Remembrance Memorial Garden” in Salinas, near the Rodeo Grounds where Monterey area Japanese were involuntarily assembled before being sent to internment camps (mostly to the <u><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/donbrr/9640061740">Poston Internment camp</a></u>) during WWII. There is an an excellent Youtube (link below) depicting this garden and then with extensive pictures of the makeshift barracks on the rodeo grounds. Salinas / ‘guard animal’? (#0069) Getting closer to why I was visiting the park, I came across this unusual statue – again with no description. But, the fenced enclosure in the background is my real reason for visiting (forthcoming picture).

Salinas / Oldenburg sculpture (# 0070) A mediocre shot because it wasn’t the reason I was visiting the park, but in the background (and partially hidden) is “Hat in Three Stages of Landing” by Claes Oldenburg. Pulling together various sources that I ran across, the Oldenburg hats ended up in Salinas at this location mainly because of a national effort to fund art for smaller cities in the 1970s, and Oldenburg had an interest in creating art for the people.

The park is next to the Salinas Rodeo ground and the hat motif was chosen to represent the stages of a hat coming to landing when thrown from a horse by a rodeo cowboy. The Oldenburg work was installed in 1978, deteriorated somewhat around 2000 and then was refurbished in 2013. To honor that Salinas is called “Salad Bowl of the World” for all of lettuce grown there, the hats are perforated. The Roadside America link below has more detail.

I was actually more interested in the statue in the front, for which I could find no description.
