Prairie View A&M – G.R. Woolfolk Building (Waller County, Texas) Historic G.R. Woolfolk Building (Bldg #0503) on the campus of Prairie View A&M University in Waller County, Texas.  This modest Collegiate Gothic style building was constructed in 1932 as the Education Building.  It was one of several campus buildings that received funding from the General Education Board (GEB), a philanthropic organization established by John D. Rockefeller, Sr. in 1903.   The building was later named after George Ruble Woolfolk, chair of the History Department and the first African American elected as a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 (NRHP No. 99000616 as the G.R. Woolfolk Social & Political Science Building).

Prairie View A&M University is a public historically black (HBCU) land-grant university and is now the third largest HBCU in the U.S.  It was founded in 1876 as the Alta Vista Agriculture & Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth as part of the Agriculture and Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University) – on the campus of the former Alta Vista plantation.  In 1899, the name was changed to Prairie View State Normal & Industrial College.  A four-year college program began in 1919 and several graduate programs were added in 1937.  The name was changed to Prairie View University in 1945 and to Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas in 1947.  Finally, in 1973 the school became Prairie View Agriculture & Mechanical (A&M) University.  In 2021, Prairie View A&M gained the R2 Carnegie Classification (Doctoral University - High Research Activity), one of only 11 HBCUs to be granted R2 status.
