Tower Shielding Facility - Oak Ridge National Laboratory You can't visit this site unless you work for the ORNL. However, there is one place where you can easily see it. Go to Melton Hill Dam along the northern edge of Loudon County. From there, go up the hill to the scenic overlook. I've zoomed in some, but it's tall enough where you can easily see it from nearly a mile away in Roane County. There is a marker which explains the purpose:

This is the Tower Shielding Facility atop Copper Ridge on the Department of Energy's reservation in Oak Ridge, TN. Back in the 1950s, it was built to test the possibility of building nuclear-powered airplanes. The 200-foot towers support cables from which a small nuclear reactor was suspended to allow radiation measurements to determine if shielding in an airplane's cockpit would adequately protect the pilot and crew from radiation.

After the initial program ended, the site was used as a research tool for various nuclear- and radiation-related projects. Today the site has been decommissioned.
