The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert (HSUMD) is located in Ridgecrest, California. It was founded in 1987 to collect, preserve, and interpret the history and culture of the Upper Mojave Desert region. The society's mission is to promote the understanding of the rich history, culture and natural environment of the Upper Mojave Desert region.

HSUMD maintains exhibits and a research library, as well as a museum with a variety of artifacts and exhibits from the area. Its collection includes artifacts from the Coso Indians, Old West settlers and miners, and the WWII era. The museum collection also includes photographs, documents, maps, and other items related to the history of the region.

HSUMD also offers educational programs, such as lectures and demonstrations, and publishes books and other materials about the region. The society also organizes tours and field trips to historical sites.

HSUMD is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization, and is funded by its members and donations. It is supported by the City of Ridgecrest, Kern County, and the Bureau of Land Management. The society hosts various events throughout the year, including special exhibits, lectures, and workshops.
