The Historical Society of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1891 and is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which is the federal appellate court with jurisdiction over Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the Virgin Islands. The society is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote the appreciation and understanding of the Third Circuit’s role in the development of the United States legal system.
The society is located in the historic US Courthouse, now known as the James A. Byrne Courthouse, in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. The building was designed in the Beaux-Arts style and completed in 1906. The society’s headquarters is located on the fourth floor, and houses the society’s archives, which contain documents, photographs, artifacts, and other materials related to the Court’s history.
The society offers educational programs to the public, including lectures and seminars, workshops, and educational tours of the courthouse. It also publishes a newsletter, The Third Circuit Court of Appeals Historical Society Bulletin, which provides updates about the society’s activities and news about the Court. The society also hosts an annual dinner to honor the Third Circuit’s past and present judges, as well as its former members.
