FORT DEFIANCE

LENOIR, NC

Fort Defiance is a historic plantation house located in Lenoir, North Carolina. The house was built in the late 18th century and served as a home for the Caldwell family. The name Fort Defiance is derived from the property’s strategic location on a hilltop overlooking the Yadkin River.

The house is a two-story brick structure with Federal and Greek Revival architectural features. It has a symmetrical facade with a central pedimented portico supported by four Doric columns. The interior of the house has a central hall with four rooms on each side. The rooms have high ceilings, elaborate woodwork, and decorative plasterwork.

Fort Defiance was used as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War. It was also occupied by Union troops for a short period of time. After the war, the house was returned to the Caldwell family and remained in their possession until the mid-20th century.

Today, Fort Defiance is open to the public as a historic site and museum. Visitors can tour the house and learn about its history and the Caldwell family. The property also includes a restored log cabin, a smokehouse, and a springhouse. The site hosts special events throughout the year, including Civil War reenactments, living history demonstrations, and holiday tours.
