HALLOCK FITZ-GREENE HOMESTEAD

The Hallock Fitz-Greene Homestead is a historic house located in Ronkonkoma, New York. Built in 1740, it is one of the oldest surviving homes on Long Island. The original owner of the homestead was Captain William Hallock, who was a sea captain and merchant. The house was passed down through his family for several generations, until it was purchased by the Fitz-Greene family in 1818. The house is a two-story, five-bay dwelling that is built in the traditional Dutch Colonial style. It features a gambrel roof, shuttered windows, and a large central chimney.

The house is now owned by the Town of Brookhaven and is open to the public. Inside the house, visitors can see period furnishings and artifacts from the Hallock and Fitz-Greene families. Outside, the homestead includes an original smokehouse, a small barn, a chicken coop, and a large garden. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is part of a larger historic district in Ronkonkoma. The Hallock Fitz-Greene Homestead is a reminder of the region’s colonial past, and a testament to the endurance of Long Island’s historic homes.
