HAVILAND - DAVISON GRIST MILL

The Haviland-Davison Grist Mill in East Rockaway, NY is a historic structure that has been around since the 17th century. Built in 1696, it is the oldest operating mill in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. The mill is located on the edge of East Rockaway inlet and is marked by a large stone building with a tall wooden windmill.

The building was originally used as a saw mill and grist mill, producing flour, feed and other products for the local community. Over the years, the mill has been owned by several different families, including the Haviland, Davison, and Willets families. In the late 19th century, the mill was renovated and the large wooden windmill was added. The mill is still operational today, producing stone-ground flour, corn meal, and animal feed.

The Haviland-Davison Grist Mill is an important part of local history and has been designated an historic site by the Town of Hempstead. It is open to visitors from April to October and offers tours, educational programs, and special events. The mill also hosts an annual “Milling Day” celebration that celebrates its long history. The mill is a reminder of a simpler time and a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of its past owners.
